Methods in Spatial Analysis

The introductory course ‚Methods in Spatial Analysis‘ was centred around the exploration of different methods developed for spatial analysis tasks in geographic information systems. The course was very practical by design encouraging the students to test and explore various geoprocessing tool available in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro. Results were shared via ESRI StoryMaps.

In total eight StoryMaps were created in the course of the semester covering various topics from spatial interpolation to visual impact analysis.

Available ESRI StoryMaps:

Distance Analysis

This assignment was focused on the application of various distance concepts and visualization techniques available on the ESRI platform ArcGIS Online.

Network Analysis

This assignment was focused on the exploration of network analysis tools to calculate the best path or the shortest walking distance between two points.

Spatial Interpolation

This assignment was focused on the creation of interpolated temperature maps based on point data and to highlight strengths and weaknesses of the interpolation methods. The assignment was done using ArcGIS Pro.

Terrain Analysis

This assignment was focused on deriving features from digital elevation models, such as slope, aspect, contour lines, and flowlines. The assignment was done using ArcGIS Pro.

Surface Runoff

This assignment was focused on calculating surface runoff from a digital elevation model using dedicated geoprocessing tools available to ArcGIS Pro.

Visual Impact Analysis

This assignment was focused on assessing the visual impact of a hypothetical building project on human perception using viewshed analysis geoprocessing tools available to ArcGIS Pro.

Sun Shine Energy

This assignment was focused on assessing the energy potential for solar panel installations on roofs in the south of Salzburg. The assignment was done using ArcGIS Pro.

Vector Overlay

This assignment was focused on creating new spatial information in ArcGIS Pro by layering multiple vector layers using noise pollution of the airport Salzburg as example.
