Geoinformatics Projects

Within the applied geoinformatics studies programme, large emphasis has been laid on projects than deepen the knowledge and give an opportunity to apply the concepts and methods introduced in the lectures. From the development of applications, the modelling of digital space, environmental processes and populations to the analysis of earth through remote sensing and spatial analysis many different projects and courses

All Projects

  • Bachelor Thesis

Within the department of geography different bachelor thesis topics were available spanning from the field of economic geography over the fields of social geography and landscape ecology to geoinformatics and geomorphology. As I am personally deeply interested in the genesis of the landscape and the shaping processes, I decided on a topic within the field…

  • Master Thesis

The master’s thesis as part of the applied geoinformatics studies programme aimed to provide the first extended scientific project. Within the department of geoinformatics (Z_GIS) different thesis ideas were provided spanning from projects in earth observation and image analysis over mobility studies to spatial modelling. While many different topic ideas were provided, I decided on…

  • Introduction into Historical GIS

The colloquium ‚Introduction into Historical GIS. Bringing 19th Century Resource Knowledge on the Map‘ offered by History Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg was centred around exploring the capabilities of geographic information systems (GIS) for the analysis of historic data. GIS are among the most important digital tools for…

  • I3 Project

The course ‚I3 Project‘, short for interdisciplinary, integrated, interactive project was a late master’s seminar course that prepares students for their master’s thesis by helping to develop, test, and validate their competencies in a first large scientific project. Students were challenged with a major project to be completed through all its stages. From problem analysis,…

  • Geoinformatics

Hello! Have you ever asked yourself what exactly geoinformatics is? Is it something like geography? Is it informatics? Don’t worry, in this post I will provide a brief introduction into the field and tell you what on earth geoinformatics is and what makes it such an interesting field to study. „Geoinformatics is the science and…

  • Geovisualization and Advanced Cartography

The introductory seminar course ‚Geovisualization and Advanced Cartography‘ was centred around the communication of geographic information through maps and other types of cartographic representations, dealing with map design, methods for map making, and the application of theories and concepts in practice. The course was designed around three projects. The projects covered selected topics of geovisualization…

  • Spatial Data Infrastructure: Services Implementation

The Internet and the latest Information and Communication Technologies revolutionized the way in which users interact with the GI resources, providing the foundation for developing what is known today as Online GIS or Web GIS. This new GIS paradigm exposes GI content and tools over the web, contributing to the GIS democratization. In this context,…

  • GIScience: Theory and Concepts

GIScience or Geographic Information Science is a a multidisciplinary field that utilizes spatial data analysis and technology to understand and solve complex geographic problems. GIScience provides the conceptual and theoretical foundation for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIScience focuses on the theories, methods, and principles behind spatial data analysis, while GIS is the practical application of…

  • Interdisciplinary Project: Application Development

The interdisciplinary project ‚Application Development‘ was a group project of up to three students aimed at incorporating the gained knowledge in software development, spatial analysis skills, and project management to create a new geo-application. The course was split in two parts. The first part was dedicated to develop a mobile web app using geo-browser APIs,…

  • Spatial Simulation

The course ‚Spatial Simulation‘ was focused on applying concepts and methods introduced in the course ‚Modelling Geographical Systems‘ and to experiment with selected types of Spatial Simulation models to get an understanding of the complexity of such modelling processes. The main focus was put on the implementation of agent-based models and cellular automata, as both…

  • Analysis and Modelling

The seminar course ‚Analysis and Modelling‘ built upon the introductory course ‚Methods in Spatial Analysis‘ and offered the opportunity to focus on a selected method inside a larger project and explore the capabilities more in depth. Results should be then finalized in form of a seminar paper. I decided to choose the topic of procedural…

  • Object-based Image Analysis

The course ‚Object-based Image Analysis‘ was a deep dive into the topics of remote sensing and image analysis, providing advanced insights into the technique of object-based image analysis (OBIA). In difference to other traditional image analysis approaches, OBIA does not work on the pixel level of the image but instead creates so called image objects…
